From 27 Teachers to Almost 60: The Growing Bedford Music Cooperative

When Bedford Music Cooperative began, we started with just 27 teachers. Over the years, some teachers have moved on while many new faces have joined us, and we have steadily grown to just under 60 teacher members. This September alone, we were delighted to welcome four new piano teachers to the Coop!

Our teachers are a diverse and talented group. Not all work with us full-time — many also teach for other Co-operatives and Music Services, while others work as freelance performers, composers and musicians alongside their teaching. This wealth of experience brings a fantastic range of musical knowledge and experience to our pupils.

Supporting Schools and Pupils Across Bedford

Our teachers work in almost all of the local primary schools and all of the secondary schools, providing instrumental and vocal tuition to pupils across Bedford.

We support pupils at every stage of their musical journey, from those taking their first steps with an instrument through to students working towards GCSE, BTEC and A Level qualifications.

For some pupils, their musical journey may lead to a Conservatoire or University. For many others, learning an instrument simply becomes a skill and hobby that they can enjoy throughout their lives. Whatever their ambitions, our teachers are here to support and encourage them.

Supporting Our Teacher Members

All our teacher members are self-employed, building their own teaching practices and developing partnerships with schools. Over time, they establish strong relationships with their pupils and their families, creating supportive and positive learning environments.

This model allows our teachers to develop their own musical careers alongside their work with Bedford Music Cooperative, while being part of a wider community of professional musicians and educators.

Creating a Musical Progression Route

Alongside individual and small-group tuition, we run Saturday morning and Friday evening Music Centre groups, helping pupils take the next step in their musical development.

Our Saturday morning programme introduces children to the fundamentals of playing a wide range of orchestral, rock and pop instruments, as well as singing. It also gives younger musicians the opportunity to discover the real joy of making music together.

As pupils develop their skills and confidence, our Friday evening groups provide opportunities to progress into bands and orchestral ensembles. Our rock and pop musicians can also progress into more advanced groups run by the Bedford Music Service.

More Than Just Music Lessons

At Bedford Music Cooperative, we're proud to offer more than individual music lessons. Along with other members of the BLMK, we're helping to create a progression route for young musicians, whatever their musical interests, abilities or ambitions.

From a child's very first notes to GCSEs, A Levels and beyond, our aim is to help every pupil develop their skills, confidence and love of music - whether that leads to a career in music or simply a hobby they enjoy for life.

We're incredibly proud of how far the Cooperative has come - from 27 teachers to almost 60, and with our musical community continuing to grow.
