Tuesdays 9.30 -11.30 Term Time

Music Provision for Home-Educating Families in Bedfordshire

These sessions are mainly attended by home-educated children. Parents join in with some of the sessions. Music Cooperative teachers provide the group lessons and any associated instrumental lessons booked through the hub. (These do not have to take place at the same time or place as the group sessions.) The Church End setting is ideal for home-educating families with plenty of outdoor space to socialise. This includes the Home Ed Community Garden where the Home-Ed garden working party are based, also on Tuesday mornings. Please contact hfarrow@bedsmusic.coop for further information.

10.15 - 10.55 First Steps Music Class (Age approx. 4-7)

This is a group for building an enjoyment of music together and some basic skills in singing, keeping a beat and playing lots of musical games. Sessions include puppets, music and movement, story-telling, parachutes and plenty more. Supervised children can stay and play together in the outdoor spaces after the class.

10.55 - 11.35 Home-Ed Music Explorers (Age approx. 7-11)

These usually start with teacher-led musicianship games, improvisation, listening and group activities to build musical confidence and understanding. Projects lead to imaginative and eclectic group performances where individuals work to their own strengths. We explore and celebrate a wide range of styles including folk, jazz, pop and classical. Bring your own instrument/voice or use one of ours. We are a really friendly and welcoming group.

As a dedicated part of this session we work on catchy and beautiful songs from all around the world, accompanying ourselves with body beats and percussion and our own instruments. Vocal skills and harmonies are taught along the way. Last term culminated in a much appreciated visit to a local retirement home. This term we hope to revisit the Bedford Christmas Tree Festival as well as make our own end-of-term performances.

Instrumental lessons

It is possible for all home-educated children to book instrumental lessons on most instruments through the Music Cooperative.

There are also large group ‘Learn to play’ sessions at the Saturday Centre. Please apply here.

It is also possible to form smaller, daytime, ‘Learn to Play’ groups for the home-educated. Popular choices are the recorder and violin. Please contact hfarrow@bedsmusic.coop to see what is currently available or initiate a new group.
